About the GSP
The German Shorthaired Pointer is an all purpose gundog… a dog that hunts, points and retrieves. This takes no time at all to read but much more time to explain and understand. The original German breeders had as their ideal:
- A dog that would work in all conditions of weather and cover
- Would hunt, point and retrieve tenderly on land or in the water
- Track wounded game
- Act as a guard against poachers
- Be brave against predators
About the Club
One must go back, in fact, to 1949 to find the first beginnings of the Club. It was in that year that the following advertisement appeared in a dog paper:-
“Please will Mr. Sterne who owns a German Shorthaired Pointer contact Mr. Vickers”
Mr. Sterne did as requested and the two arranged to meet at Waterloo Station. After waiting for some time, Mr. Sterne was about to give up when he caught sight of a figure in the distance, accompanied by a German Shorthaired Pointer, making for the exit. A hurried chase, a hasty “Mr. Vickers? – I’m Sterne”, and the three dashed down the platform, boarding the train as it began to move.

Providing your GSP has enjoyed a healthy diet along with sufficient exercise, there is very little cosmetic preparation needed for a show. There is, however, plenty to do before entering one and it is always a good idea to visit a couple of local shows to observe and learn what is expected of you and your dog.

Welcome to the world of dogs, or more specifically Hunt Point and Retrieve Gundogs, which includes German Shorthaired, Longhaired and Wirehaired Pointer, Weimaraner, Hungarian Vizsla, Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla, Brittany, Italian Spinone, Bracco Italiano, Large Munsterlander and several more. All these breeds compete on equal footing in HPR Field Trials, Working Tests, Spring Pointing Tests and Field Training Classes. For many working dog handlers, field trials are their final goal. The most appropriate route starts with your local training class followed by Working Tests, Spring Pointing Tests and finally Field Trials.
